Conjuring Harmonic Movement and Polyphony from a Single Static Loop
How do you squeeze multiple parts and chord progressions out of one isolated loop? There are many possible ways to approach this kind of challenge. In this video, we look at one example, using the HX Stomp to create multiple harmonized lines, and then manipulate their pitches independently.
Special thanks to Adam Stark for sending me on this particular line of thought.

Rhythmic Transformation with MIDI Clock Dividing on the JMK Plexus:4 (w/LP1, Volca Drum, Microcosm)
Переглядів 29814 днів тому
The JMK Plexus:4 has a built-in MIDI clock divider. This means that it can change the rhythmic relationship between a clock master and the devices following it, which opens the door to triplets and polyrhythms from devices that don't offer such things by themselves. Here, we look at dividing the master clock from the Looperlative LP1, sending sync to the Korg Volca Drum and Hologram Microcosm, ...
Controlling Hardware with USB MIDI (and No Computer) with the JMK Plexus:4 and Empress Zoia
Переглядів 23814 днів тому
This video is one part deep-dive into multi-controller performance, and one part demo of seamless USB MIDI integration with hardware. The JMK Pedals Plexus:4 is a MIDI router and filter which, amongst its many possibilities, can act as a USB host for MIDI controllers. This means that MIDI devices that only operate via USB can control hardware - without a computer - by using the Plexus:4 as a co...
Exploring Soft Replace, and Building It in Ableton Live and the HX Stomp
Переглядів 251Місяць тому
Soft Replace is an extremely rare looping technique, with a uniquely fluid sound. But it turns out to be a fairly easy thing to make happen with hugely popular platforms like Ableton Live and the Line 6 HX/Helix ecosystem. We begin with a look at Soft Replace in its "native"/built-in form on the Glou-Glou Loupé. We then take the very particular intersections of input level and feedback amount n...
Live Looping in a Chromatic Minefield with Jeff Kaiser's Max For Live Device
Переглядів 368Місяць тому
What happens when you overdub onto a loop while its speed is being changed chromatically? In this video, we explore different outcomes to this intriguing but perilous scenario. It's a continuation of our look at playing a loop's pitch melodically in Ableton Live, thanks to Jeff Kaiser's Max For Live device (link below). Overdubbing while changing the loop's speed in this way creates some dramat...
Playing the Pitch of Ableton Live's Looper with Jeff Kaiser's Max For Live Device
Переглядів 302Місяць тому
Being able to "play" the pitch of a loop melodically is a rare function, but it's one that opens up many different possibilities. Here, we look at a Max For Live device, made by musician/technologist/scholar Jeff Kaiser, which easily enables this functionality in Ableton Live. We look at adding it to a Live set, and preview a few of the possibilities this makes possible. Download Jeff Kaiser's ...
Radical Loop Transformation and Fluid Tempo on the Loupé
Переглядів 2132 місяці тому
Our previous video examined Loupé manipulation based on quantized precision and consistent tempo sync, warping the loop's length in metric harmony with an external drum machine. This video abandons all of that, and dives into functions that change the length of the loop on a microscopic basis. As the loop morphs through an endless variety of lengths and shapes, the sync output is constantly rec...
Polymeter, Rhythmic Phasing, Quantized Functions, and Minimal Techno on the Loupé
Переглядів 2852 місяці тому
The many rhythmic possibilities of the Loupé can reshape a loop in countless ways. But even as the loop length expands and contracts, the Loupé will generate a consistent sync tempo based on its initial timing. Here, we apply these concepts by providing sync to a Korg Volca Drum, while putting a loop through countless variations and rhythmic permutations. Of particular note here, and documented...
Uncommon Functions and MIDI Hacks with Ableton Live's Stock Looper
Переглядів 3132 місяці тому
The stock looper in Ableton Live has a lot going on beyond the "usual" live looping functions. Lurking under the hood are more obscure features that tend to go largely unexplored, even by more advanced Ableton users. Here, we examine some of those possibilities, as well as a couple of MIDI hacks to squeeze some advanced functionality out of the Ableton looper, including Momentary Replace and Me...
Melodic Pitch Shifting (or "Repitching") on the HX Stomp
Переглядів 4423 місяці тому
"Repitching" - changing the pitch of a loop, without changing its speed or timing - is a rare feature in the live looping world. For live performance musicians, though, that kind of behavior is an essential component of pitch-shifting effects. It turns out that the HX Stomp has many such effects, which can be applied to an incoming sound. That makes yet another way it can easily access function...
Live Looping with Effects in the Feedback Path on the HX Stomp (PLEASE USE WITH CAUTION)
Переглядів 3883 місяці тому
IMPORTANT PREFACE: Please exercise caution if trying the following on your own, and be sure to keep your volume levels low and safe. Using audio effects with live looping tends to involve two arrangements: sending effects into the loop as overdubs, or post-processing the entire loop after the fact. But this video explores an esoteric and rarified third option, which is to place effects in the f...
The Secret Feedback Control in the HX 1 Switch Looper
Переглядів 3903 місяці тому
Feedback is an incredibly powerful tool in live looping - but many popular loopers don't have it as a feature. Much to my surprise, it turns out that the "Overdub" parameter on the HX Stomp's 1 Switch Looper is actually a very capable Feedback control. Here, we examine it in many forms, controlled by a mouse, a foot switch, and an external expression pedal. Once again, the highly popular HX ser...
Loop Repitching with LFOs and Savarts on the Loupé
Переглядів 4344 місяці тому
"Repitching" a loop means changing its pitch while preserving the original speed and timing. It's a rare function to find in live looping, and it's not formally a part of the Loupé feature set. But using the Loupé's LFO engine, in combination with its Savarts intonation control, lets us hack our way into Repitching territory. This video looks at how to do so, as well as different parameters tha...
Using the Glitch Delay as a Dynamic Alternative to the Shuffling Looper on the HX Stomp

Despite its many compelling qualities, the HX Stomp's Shuffling Looper doesn't allow overdubbing. But the Glitch Delay, which shares many functions and parameters with the Shuffling Looper, can get into that territory. Here, we look at configuring the Glitch Delay as a looping platform, with its many powerful effects working in conjunction with Overdub, Feedback, and Replace functionality. 0:00...
Live Looping with Replace and Feedback on the HX Stomp

Sometimes wildly popular tools can be used to explore unconventional ideas. In this case, the HX Stomp's surprisingly deep and flexible ecosystem lets us explore some less-common looping concepts. Functions like Feedback and Replace are hugely powerful tools. But many looping devices - including the stock HX loopers - don't have a Feedback control, and even fewer offer Replace functionality. Thank you! What is actually the difference between Overdub and Record function? I'm just starting out on Morningstar after years of using Blooper without one. I ask because on Blooper when I add other layers on top, I also hit just the record button. Why can't I hit record on the Morningstar to Overdub add other layers. Or in other words. What does the overdub function do?

It's like "No Input Mixing" with the HX. Does a Tap Tempo on the Delay block before the Send keep the noise loop in time with external stuff? I use the Boss GT1000core like most people use the HX Stomp. I don't think it would allow an output (send) to be fed back into an input (return), BUT, I have four paths for mine, set up into my Morningstar MC10X/Matrix router...I could probably do this (externally) and add some extra stuff via the other Matrix looped devices...of coarse, adhering to "No Input Looping" rules...WATCH YOUR LEVELS. Just curious, do you attenuate your Send or Return, or is that compressor block dealing with runaway?

Like any good music, you might not have a lot of "fans" but the ones you have are really into it. I'm binging your videos. They are either "opening up my eyes to" or "confirming and and showing me the tricks to" how to achieve the sounds I thought possible. Yer doing' the LAWRDS werk here, my boy! Let's see some fresh ones.

  • @TheLordcasio
    @TheLordcasio 2 місяці тому

When using the Expression Pedal to adjust the Modifier, why did the Expression Pedal not change the Modifier position in real time (vs after releasing and re-engaging the momentary Modifier switch? Is this because the Expression Pedal command was in slot 2 vs after the Release command? Is it a quirk of the CBA Blooper? I have the MS MC8 as my MIDI controller and would love to replicate some of this with my Meris LVX, but maybe with a Momentary control of a loop effect on (for example Switch C) and a Latching version of the same control on the button above it (switch G in this example). Next, have you sorted out a way to have the Momentary functions quantized to some degree? Quick presses could adhere to a 64th or even 128th of the current BPM, medium presses = 16th or an 8th of the BPM...etc. It's a cool trick when something looped is seemingly chaotic, but after you trigger a drum loop, it all falls into place. Or in my case, chaos loops into a tempo sync'd long phrase looper, like the Boss RC600. Great video by the way...more deep dives into the MS MC8. ps:: also had the Gibson Echoplex Looper, then moved onto the Electric Repeater...then down the rabbit hole. Landed on the Boss RC600 (currently).

Wow.. Not sure after watching all of the videos on youtube whether i needed to get this after all. Endless demonstrations of how to make a total unmusical mess. Only one vid where it is actually making some beautiful music. A bit like some modular vids where after spending enough to buy a decent house the demonstrator manages a few bleeps and bloops that my cat runs away from. Hmmm. technology is great but in the hands of a musician it becomes beautiful. Or not. all very clever but what about some actual music rather than a disjointed cacophany? I think Loopy pro can do what I need more easily. At least you can undo the layers as required. Someone somewhere must be making this app sound incredible. Any chance of a video if you are?

I started experimenting with this patch idea, though my setup slightly differs from this one. I do have a couple pedals in the FX loop, one of which is a delay(technically they’re both delays, but one is the Zoia with a granular delay), so I may see about opening up a block on the HX and have my looping delay be outboard. I will experiment with two different effects in the loop. This is genius, as I had been trying to accomplish something similar, but was unsure how to set it up.
